What is a Ductless Mini-Split AC System & How Does It Work?
A ductless mini-split system is an energy-efficient alternative to traditional central air conditioning and heating systems. Unlike conventional HVAC units that require ductwork to distribute air, mini-split systems operate without ducts, making them ideal for homes without existing ductwork or for spaces that need zoned climate control.
How a Mini-Split System Works
A ductless mini-split system consists of two main components:
- Outdoor Unit (Condenser/Compressor): This unit is installed outside the home and is responsible for heat exchange.
- Indoor Air Handler: This unit is mounted on a wall, ceiling, or floor inside the home and delivers conditioned air directly into the room.
The two units are connected by a small conduit that houses the refrigerant lines, power cable, and drain line. This allows the system to transfer heat efficiently without the need for bulky ductwork.
Heating & Cooling Functionality
- Cooling Mode: The mini-split extracts heat from inside your home and releases it outdoors, keeping your space cool and comfortable.
- Heating Mode: During colder months, the system reverses the process by pulling heat from the outdoor air and transferring it indoors.
